Background

The Kenya Society for the Blind (KSB) is a charitable organization established in 1956 by an Act of Parliament. KSB was established to:

  • Promote the welfare, education, training and employment of the blind.
  • Assist the government, societies, any institution, organization or society or any other person in all matters relating to the blind.
  • Awaken public interest in the welfare of the blind and in all matters relating to blindness.
  • Advice on all things necessary or required in any matter relating to or connected with the blind.

KSB is mandated by the Act, to offer, support and coordinate comprehensive eye care service in Kenya. KSB works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (Medical Services and Public Health). The Ministry is represented in the Board by an appointee of the Permanent Secretary. In Kenya, eye care services (prevention and treatment) are coordinated through a department referred to as Division of Ophthalmic Services (DOS). From the public Health, we have a Division of Preventive Ophthalmic Services. The Head of DOS is the appointed representative of the Permanent Secretary in the KSB Board.

The 3 main programmes conducted by KSB include;

  1. Education Programme
  2. Eye Care Programme
  3. Rehabilitation Programme

Fundraising Campaign 2016/2017

“Every 10 sighted Kenyans can unite to support the education of one visually impaired child”

KSB is seeking for your support towards realizing the objectives of the fundraising campaign through a donation, The Kenya Society for the Blind is a non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of donors and individuals like you to support our programs and services and will be delighted receive any amount or gift in Cash or in Kind towards realization of the campaign’s objectives. Dr. K.Laibuta (Vice Chairman KSB) is spearheading a major fundraising campaign for KSB to raising K.SH 1.6 billion. The campaign includes 5 charitable activities namely:

  1. 1,000 Holes Blind Golf Challenge
  2. Ngong Hills Climb,
  3. Mt. Longonot climb,
  4. Mt. Kenya Climb and
  5. Dinner in the dark.

Campaign Objectives

The funds will be used to Develop World Class Rehabilitation Center of Excellency for persons with Disabilities and to equip the Eye Drop Production Unit so as to prevent avoidable blindness. 80% of blindness is preventable (WHO)

Activity 1

Dr. Laibuta is challenging friend and golfers to support him with Kshs 1,000 for every hole he plays in his 1,000 holes Blind Golf Challenge and to beat him for a one Hole blindfolded for Kshs 10,000 in a Golf Tournament scheduled on 29th July 2016 at Limuru Country Club.

Golfers can practice blindfold golfing for the tournament in your club by obtaining a blind folder for Kshs 1,000 from the golf administrator and registering for Kshs 2,500 for the tournament.

Other Activities
  1. Ngong Hills Climb. Ngong Hills climb on 25th June 2016 for KES 1,500 per person.
  2. Mt. Longonot Climb on 24th Sep 2016 for KES 1,500 per person. Ngong Hills climb on 25th June 2016 for KES 1,500 per person.
  3. Mt. Kenya Climb on 18th October – 21st October 2016 for KES 50,000 per person. You don’t need to climb to the top (lenana peak) but you can rally friends and corporates to pay for a visually impaired to participate in the climb and get to accompany Dr. Laibuta to Lenana peak. The 50,000 is a comprehensive package that include:
    1. Air Rescue cover
    2. Transport to and from Mt. Kenya from Nairobi
    3. A Potter per every climber
    4. A guide per every climber
    5. Food and Beverages
    6. Accommodation (in camp 1-day 1; Camp 2-day 2 and camp 3 in day three and four)
  4. Dinner in the Dark in 2nd Dec 2016 to be served in a 5-Star hotel in Nairobi at a cost of KES 10,000 per person and 8-seater table for KES 100,000
